Disclosure: This blog entry is very difficult for me to write... Somehow, my pictures taken during this trip got deleted from my camera. Please take a moment of silence before proceeding. (I will add pictures from my roommates cameras, however, they may not be as good as the beautiful masterpieces I take!)
On Friday, February 12, Cameron, Garrison, and I hopped on RyanAir and flew to Bratislava, Slovakia. We arrived, took a bus to the train station, took a cab from there, and checked into our hostel (Vegas Hostel). While in Paris we have met a friend who is from Slovakia, so he gave us a bunch of information on what to see and do.
Our first stop, The 1st Slovak Pub! This pub/restaurant was a convenient 5 minute walk from our hostel and was by far one of my favorite restaurants of my entire trip thus far (food was not only amazing, but CHEAP!!) We ordered three delicious meals, along with 15 beers for a grand total of 30 euros! This would have easily cost upwards of 100 euro in Paris.
Speaking of beer... It was unanimous between the three of us that the beer here was some of the best we have ever had. Zlaty Bazant, you have stolen my heart!
While at the pub, a group of 16 Scottish men sat down next to us at our table. One of the guys had on a "Hi, How are you?" shirt with a picture of a frog... this is a famous graffiti landmark in Austin, TX. Many of you know what I am talking about... if not just google it! This is how the night began... we asked him if he was from Austin or had visited, the rest is history. (It turns out his friend gave him the shirt and he had never sat foot in Austin before.) They were one of the most fun group of guys ever! We hopped in on their celebrations and scouted out a few other bars with them.
On Saturday, we went sightseeing! The castle here was beautiful! By the way, did I mention how cold it was?? It was snowing and the temperature was around 10 degrees with high winds.
After some sightseeing and shopping, we hoped on a train to Vienna, Austria. Vienna and Bratislava are known as the two closest capitals in the world (only an hour apart). Here in Vienna, we stayed with our friend Ivonne (whom we have also met through school). After arriving, we went to a local club for the evening. On Sunday (Valentine's Day), we went sightseeing! There is so much history in Vienna (and I had many beautiful pictures I was hoping to share)! While sightseeing, we found out about a symphony that would be performing that evening. Garrison was leaving that afternoon, but since me and Cameron weren't heading home until Monday afternoon, we decided to purchase tickets and see the orchestra perform Strauss and Mozart. The evening was beautiful!! Classical music, opera singers, waltzing, and ballet... all within the gorgeous setting of Kursalon Wien.
Monday, we took the train back to Bratislava to take advantage of some inexpensive shopping before our flight home.
This was one successful trip!!
