What puts this town "on the map" is the fact that it is home to Poseidon's Temple. The dramatic, breathtaking coastline, makes this the ideal spot to place a temple honoring the god of the sea. The marble temple has served as a landmark for sailors from ancient times to today. The sanctuary that is standing today was built in 444 BC, on top of older ruins, and was first mentioned in Homer's famous work entitled Odyssey.
Before exploring the temple, we climbed up a cliff overlooking the sea, and found the cove at the foot of where a temple honoring Athena used to stand.
We explored the cove and decided to go for a swim! The water was amazing, but very very cold!
After a dip in the sea, we went to the top of the cliff were the Temple of Poseidon stands and soaked up the moment.
There is a cute cafe that is conveniently located next to the temple (great way to ensure some business = stick a restaurant right next to a tourist location). The food was great, and the view was even more amazing!
Next stop Athens via bus home!
